RULES AND MANDATORY GEAR

We have been organizing the High Coast Winter Trail annually since 2017, and we are proud of how, as organizers, together with you as participants, we have created not only an incredibly beautiful but also a safe and fun experience. Here you will find the rules and requirements for the High Coast Winter Trail.

OVERVIEW

Here you will find a brief summary of the rules and mandatory gear. Further down the page, you can find more detailed information on each point.

1. Participation is at your own risk. The course has been designed to be as safe as possible, and medical personnel will be on site. The organizer does not cover any personal injuries or damage to equipment.

2. Safety – a shared responsibility. We have created a safe course given the terrain, with volunteers and medical personnel on site. You are responsible for acting in a safe manner throughout the experience.

3. Mandatory Equipment & Drop-Bag. Certain clothing and equipment are mandatory for your safety on the course. Participants without the required equipment will be disqualified from the race. We offer a Drop-Bag service.

4. Show consideration for nature. As a participant, you must show respect for other visitors in the World Heritage area and follow the rules in Reserves and National Parks.

5. Purchased entry is valid. The entry cannot be canceled, but you can purchase cancellation and accident insurance from Startklar, which covers all races in Sweden for one year for just 155 SEK.

6. Selling your entry. It is perfectly fine to resell your entry. The easiest way to do this is in the participant group on Facebook. The person taking over your entry will keep your specified t-shirt size, but we will do our best to allow a size exchange after the race once all other participants have picked up their t-shirts.

1. PARTICIPATION AT YOUR OWN RISK

By registering for the High Coast Winter Trail, you acknowledge that you are participating at your own risk. We have designed a trail that is easy to follow with attentive running and as safe as possible in rugged terrain. However, running a trail race during the winter season always involves risks, such as clothing or equipment breaking, or injury. You accept this risk. High Coast Winter Trail is not responsible for any costs incurred if you are injured or if your equipment is damaged. If you are feeling unwell or experiencing pain, we advise you not to start. Medical support in the form of sports doctors will be available on site.

Upon registration, you will be required to confirm that you have read and accepted the following text:

I hereby confirm that I have understood the safety regulations for the High Coast Winter Trail and that I will follow them. I am aware that there is a risk of injury in this activity, and I accept that risk. I accept that High Coast Winter Trail is not responsible for any damage to equipment or personal injury that may occur during participation.

I accept that it is prohibited to participate in the High Coast Winter Trail under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and that the race organizers have the right to remove individuals who may pose a danger to themselves or others without any financial compensation. I am responsible for weighing the risks associated with known illnesses and injuries.

2. SAFETY – A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY

Running a trail race during the winter season can involve risks such as clothing or equipment breaking, or the possibility of injury. Stay on the trail and be cautious when descending slopes to reduce the risk of injury. We will also do our utmost to create a safe race environment.

  • The race will follow existing trails, which we have reinforced with additional markings to make them easy to follow. There will also be marshals along the course.
  • We will establish a large aid station at the southern entrance of Skuleskogen National Park. Intermediate times will be provided here, and both the Mountain Loop (for participants in EXTREME 35 km and INSANE 50 km) and Coastal Loop (for participants in INSANE 50 km) will start from this location. This allows us to keep track of where participants are along the course.
  • First-aid trained marshals will be present at the South Entrance and at the finish line.
  • Professional emergency medical personnel will be stationed at Slåttdalsskrevan.
  • All participants will receive a contact number for the race organizers and a reminder of the emergency number 112 in case of an urgent or serious injury.
  • As a participant, we encourage you to keep an eye on other participants and immediately report anything that may require attention from the race organizers.

3. MANDATORY EQUIPMENT & DROP-BAG

3a. MANDATORY EQUIPMENT ON YOUR BODY

  • Base layer shirt
  • Wind jacket
  • Race bib (to be attached to your chest or leg, provided during check-in)
  • Wind pants/tights
  • Hat or insulated buff
  • Gloves
  • Running shoes

Keep an eye on the weather forecast before the race. The above clothing is mandatory, but how individuals react to cold weather can vary. It may be a good idea to bring a warming mid-layer as well.

3b. MANDATORY EQUIPMENT IN YOUR BACKPACK

  • Backpack
  • Lightweight insulating jacket that can be worn at the start or in case of injury. *For example: Women: Haglöfs Essens Mimic Men: Haglöfs Essens Mimic
  • Extra base layer shirt
  • Map (provided during check-in) – it's a good idea to bring a plastic sleeve
  • First aid kit and elastic bandage
  • Mobile phone with the number of the race management*
  • Sunglasses
  • Container for at least 1L of liquid
  • Whistle
  • Headlamp
  • Energy (in any form)
  • Electrolyte replacement (e.g., Resorb)
  • Toilet paper and plastic bag

* The insulating jacket is meant to keep you warm in case of injury. A thin wind jacket is not an insulating garment and therefore does not count as an insulating jacket. In the event of an injury, this jacket should be used until help arrives, making it essential for both your comfort and the safety of you and other participants.
** Sunscreen is not included in the mandatory equipment, but we recommend that you apply sunscreen before the race starts if the weather is sunny.

3c. DROP BAG

You can leave clearly labeled luggage with your name and start number at FriluftsByn between 07:00 and 09:00. You can access your bag at the South Entrance from 09:00 to 16:00. The bag will then be transported back to FriluftsByn. See more information in Participant PM.

4. SHOW CONSIDERATION IN NATURE

High Coast Winter Trail passes through Skuleskogens National Park, Skuleberget Nature Reserve, and along the High Coast Trail.

Show consideration to other visitors
Although there are few visitors in these areas during winter, we should always show respect for others who may be present in these locations.

Take care of your trash
We place great importance on leaving the area in perfect condition without discarded wrappers or gels. Therefore, it is strictly prohibited to leave trash along the trail except at the High Coast Winter Trail trash bins at the South Entrance and the finish line. If any checkpoint official, other runner, or guide sees a runner discarding trash, they will be immediately disqualified.

Use of toilets
It is allowed to use the toilets available in the national park, at FriluftsByn, and at FriluftsByn’s Toppstuga. However, please make sure to bring your own toilet paper as it may run out.

5. PURCHASED REGISTRATION IS FINAL

Registration for High Coast Winter Trail is limited, and as with concerts, it is non-refundable, even with a doctor’s note. If you want to be on the safe side, you can purchase a cancellation and accident insurance from Startklar. Startklar is used by most races and events in Sweden, and for only 155 SEK, you get insurance that covers all races in Sweden for one year.

6. SELLING YOUR REGISTRATION

You can transfer your registration to another person. On your booking confirmation email, you will find a link to change the name of the person who will participate. When you access the link, you will see your name, but you can update it to the name of the person who bought your registration. It’s also a good idea to forward your confirmation email to the person who bought your registration, so they can make any necessary changes. The person taking over your registration will inherit your t-shirt size and the distance you originally selected. It is perfectly fine to run a different distance than the one you initially selected, and you can simply notify the organizers at check-in. If the person has a different t-shirt size than you, they can exchange their t-shirt for a different size after the race, depending on availability.
