The High Coast Winter Trail – Extreme 35k is an extraordinary adventure through one of Scandinavia’s most stunning landscapes – the High Coast World Heritage Site of Sweden.
Building on the Classic XL 30k route, the Extreme adds an extra mountain – Herrestaberget – creating a longer, tougher, and even more spectacular journey through snow-covered forests, rugged coastline, and frozen peaks.
It’s a challenge for those who seek something beyond the ordinary: to test themselves, to experience the wild Nordic beauty up close, and to feel the power of nature in its purest winter form.
With up to 12 hours to complete the course, you can push your limits while taking the time to truly absorb the views, the stillness, and the adventure that defines the High Coast.

EXTREME 35k
The High Coast Winter Trail – Extreme 35k is an extreme challenge in an equally extraordinary landscape – right in the heart of the High Coast World Heritage Site.
Buses depart from FriluftsByn to the starting point along the E4 highway, where your adventure begins. The route follows the same three stages as the Classic XL 30k – taking you through Skuleskogen National Park, across Getsvedjeberget, and up the mighty Skuleberget, before returning to FriluftsByn.
But this is where the Extreme 35k truly earns its name. From FriluftsByn, you continue on to Herrestaberget – an additional mountain stage that brings both challenge and reward, with sweeping views across the frozen High Coast landscape. It’s tougher, longer, and breathtakingly beautiful – the ultimate winter test.
A true Scandinavian adventure you’ll never forget.
FOUR STAGES
High Coast Winter Trail 35k consists of four stages: the three Classic XL stages plus Herrestaberget.
Stage 1: West to South 13k
Stage 2: Entré Syd – Norrfjärden 10k
Stage 3. Skuleberget 7k
Stage 4. Herrestaberget 5k
Not your day? That´s OK!
If your energy fades after Skuleberget, you can skip Herrestaberget and head straight to the finish line, where you’ll be registered as a Classic XL 30k finisher.
And even earlier, if you reach the second by Norrfjärden energy station feeling completely spent, you can choose to go directly to the finish, skip Skuleberget, and complete the Classic 25k instead.
Whatever happens out there – you’re still part of the adventure, and crossing that finish line is always an achievement to be proud of.
CUT-LINES
For your safety and to ensure that everyone returns to FriluftsByn on time, there are three cut-lines. These times are quite generous, and we have not yet had to pull anyone off the course.
14:00: Entré Syd (13k).
To ensure everyone’s safety participants who haven’t reached the 13k point within 5,5 hours will be transported back to FriluftsByn upon arrival and will not continue the race.
16:00: Norrfjärden (23k)
To ensure everyone’s safety, participants who haven’t reached the Norrfjärden energy station (23km) within 7,5 hours will be transported back to FriluftsByn upon arrival and will not continue the race.
18:00: FriluftsByn (30k)
Participants who haven’t reached this point within 9.5 hours will be guided directly to the finish line and registered as Classic XL 30k finishers. You’ve still completed one of Sweden’s most iconic winter trail routes — an incredible achievement worthy of celebration at the finish line.
START
The Extreme 35k begins about 2.5 kilometers before the West Entrance of Skuleskogen National Park. The first stretch follows a cleared forest road, giving everyone the chance to find their rhythm and position before the surface turns to trail and the real adventure begins – entering the snow-covered wilderness of Skuleskogen National Park through the West Entrance.
Stage 1:
WEST TO SOUTH: 13k
The opening stage takes you deep into Skuleskogen National Park – often described as one of Sweden’s most breathtaking natural treasures. Entering through the West Entrance, the trail climbs gradually over Stampberget and Slåttdalsberget, rewarding your effort with sweeping views of snow-covered forests and the frozen coastline of the High Coast World Heritage Site.
If you have the energy, make the short 80-meter detour to the famous Slåttdalsskrevan canyon – a spectacular natural rift carved by ice and time.
The stage finishes at the South Entrance energy station, where warmth, encouragement, and new strength await before continuing your winter adventure.
Stage 2:
SOUTH ENTRANCE TO NORRFJÄRDEN: 10k
From the South Entrance of Skuleskogen, the trail begins with a stretch of quiet forest road before leading you back into the deep winter woods. The atmosphere changes here – the world narrows, the snow muffles every sound, and the adventure becomes wonderfully personal.
Soon, the path starts to climb toward Getsvedjeberget, where the forest opens up to reveal one of the most breathtaking viewpoints of the entire High Coast Winter Trail – vast forests, frozen bays, and the rugged coastline stretching toward the horizon.
From there, a flowing downhill section with open views guides you toward Norrfjärden, where the energy station at Höga Kusten Kajakcenter offers warmth, energy, and a moment to refuel before your next challenge.
Stage 3:
SKULEBERGET: 8k
After reaching Norrfjärden, the route leads you toward one of the most iconic landmarks of the entire High Coast – the mighty Skuleberget. Rising 295 meters above sea level, it marks both a physical and mental turning point in your Extreme 35k journey.
The northern trail winds its way to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the frozen forests, rugged coastline, and the vast expanse of the World Heritage Site. It’s the kind of view that makes every climb worth it.
From there, the trail descends along the beautiful High Coast Trail, leading you down toward FriluftsByn – where Classic runners finish, but for you, as an Extreme participant, one final mountain still awaits.
Stage 4:
HERRESTABERGET: 5k
From FriluftsByn, the trail crosses the frozen surface of Lake Gällstasjön before leading you toward your final challenge – the Herrestaberget Nature Reserve. Entering through the North Entrance, the climb begins steep and steady, winding through quiet forest and open patches of snow.
At the top, you’ll reach the famous “Church View”, one of the most photographed spots on the mountain. From here, you’ll also get a bird’s-eye view of FriluftsByn and the finish line shimmering across the frozen lake below – close enough to see, but still a mountain away.
The trail then descends and exits the reserve through the South Entrance. From here, it’s time for the final stretch across the ice and those unforgettable last steps toward the High Coast Winter Trail finish line.
FINISH LINE
Is it real? Am I here? Yes, you are! The sound of cowbells, cheers, and fellow adventurers welcoming you back – it’s one of the best feelings there is.
You’ve done it. Now a refreshing drink and a warm shower await, before we meet again at the legendary After-Trail to celebrate what you’ve accomplished.
You’re amazing — what an achievement!
