An Experience That Begins and Ends Together

When the races conclude on Saturday, we celebrate together at a cozy After-Trail event with great food and a warm sense of community.

This setup makes it easy to travel here with friends or family, even if you’re running different distances. The first to cross the finish line can enjoy a refreshing shower at FriluftsByn and unwind at the charming Winter Café, located right by the finish area.

On Friday evening, those who wish can join the pre-event gathering for tips and a course overview. You’ll also have the opportunity to check in for the races.

Twin Peaks (13 km) »

The perfect introduction to beautiful winter running! On this route, we jog and hike over Getsvedjeberget and Skuleberget, two of Höga Kusten’s most iconic peaks. The trail is challenging in parts, but with a generous 8-hour time limit, you can take your time, enjoy the breathtaking views, and capture unforgettable photos. Some participants treat this as a ”sprint” and go all out, while others see it as a nature-filled experience, savoring every moment along the way.

Three Peaks (17 km) »

Looking for a bigger challenge, more to explore, but still plenty of time to enjoy? Then Three Peaks is the right choice for you. This route takes you over three peaks: Herrestaberget, Getsvedjeberget, and Skuleberget. Tackling three summits in winter is a true challenge, but with a generous time limit, you can take it slow when needed and embrace the adventure!

Classic 25k and most popular distance. A tough challenge, but with plenty of time to complete it.

The Classic Distance!

Classic (25 km/30km) »

The classic experience combines breathtaking nature with a true physical challenge. Here, you’ll explore the High Coast’s diverse terrain and put both your endurance and mental strength to the test as you make your way through some of the World Heritage Site’s most iconic highlights.

Toward the end, you’ll reach the legendary Decision Point — where you can turn toward the finish line and complete the Classic 25k, or take on the challenge of conquering Skuleberget and cross the line as a Classic XL 30k finisher.

Challenging Distances for Experienced Runners!

Extreme (35 km) »

Ready to raise the bar? Extreme is the trail for those who truly love pushing their limits. With more climbs and a longer distance, this is one of Sweden’s tougher trail challenges.

Insane (50 km) »

For those who want to go all in – the legendary 50-kilometer race. One of Sweden’s toughest courses, this is the ultimate physical and mental test. A challenge reserved for experienced runners looking for something truly extraordinary.

Extreme 35k and Insane 50k are among the toughest winter trail challenges you can take on. Far from something for everyone – but maybe it’s for you?

Change Your Distance Based on How You Feel!

Not sure which distance is right for you? No worries – at Höga Kusten Winter Trail, you have the flexibility to adjust based on how you feel on race day. You can switch between Classic 25k, Extreme 35k, and Insane 50k either during check-in or, if necessary, during the race itself. This means you don’t have to feel pressured when choosing a distance – you can always adapt your plans if something unexpected comes up.

For participants in Twin Peaks 13k or Three Peaks 17k, it’s also possible to change your trail during check-in. However, switching distances during the race is not available for these shorter routes. With generous time limits and a focus on the experience, it’s easy to find a pace that suits you.

This flexibility allows you to come here with an open mind and tailor the experience to your needs – perfect for those who want to take it easy and enjoy the scenery, as well as for those who may want to push themselves a little further.

What is the terrain like?

Höga Kusten Winter Trail features varied terrain. All distances include ‘transition sections’ with firm ground where you can stretch your stride, but you’ll also face challenging climbs up the coastal mountains.

Running on and through snow is different from running on bare ground. Winter conditions increase energy consumption, making each kilometer feel tougher. That’s why every distance has generous time limits.

What makes winter running a bit tougher?

Winter running presents unique challenges that set it apart from running on bare ground. Here are the key factors:

1. Energy Demand and Resistance

Snow, whether packed or loose, creates a higher energy demand. Running in snow requires more strength to lift your legs higher and push through the resistance of sinking into the surface. Even packed trails can be uneven or churned up, making forward motion less efficient.

For example:
10 cm of loose snow: Increases energy cost by 30–50%.

20 cm of loose snow: Energy demand can double, requiring significant strength and endurance.

2. Balance and Stability

Snow and ice make the ground less stable, demanding more from your core, hips, and legs to maintain balance. Descents and technical sections, in particular, require extra caution and strength.

3. Cold and Mental Resilience

Cold temperatures can sap energy faster and require proper layering to stay warm without overheating. Mentally, the quiet, solitary nature of winter trails can be both calming and challenging, especially on longer distances. The combination of slower progress, chillier conditions, and fewer daylight hours can test your mental stamina.

4. Equipment Considerations

Winter often calls for specialized gear, like trail shoes with studs, gaiters to keep snow out, and thermal layers. Running without the right equipment can make winter conditions feel much harder.

These challenges make winter running uniquely demanding but also incredibly rewarding, offering a true sense of accomplishment and the chance to experience nature in its serene, snow-covered beauty.

How long do the different distances feel?

Of course, much depends on how prepared you are, but the surface conditions also play a significant role.

In some years, the winter has been less snowy, making the distances relatively comparable to running on bare ground. However, this is rare.

Typically, even when the snow is packed or well-trodden, there can still be a layer of 10 to 20 cm of snow. For an average winter, we can roughly compare the effort required to these equivalent bare-ground distances:

Twin Peaks 13k = 20 km
Three Peaks 17k = 25 km
Classic 25k = 30–40 km
Extreme 35k = 45–60 km
Insane 50k = 70–90 km

This makes winter running a unique challenge, where shorter distances can feel significantly longer due to the snow and winter conditions.

How to Conquer It! – Tips from Previous Participants!

High Coast Winter Trail has been held annually since 2017, and thousands of participants have tackled its stunning yet challenging trails. Here are four tips from those who have faced the adventure.

1. Train on Hilly Trails

If you can practice on snow-covered trails, that’s ideal, but not everyone has that opportunity. However, training on hilly trails can be a great substitute. Preparing in conditions similar to Höga Kusten is especially important if you’re planning to take on Classic, Extreme, or Insane.

2. Choose the Right Gear

Wear running shoes with excellent grip—brands like Icebug work well. Dress in layers to regulate your temperature and always bring extra gloves and a hat.

3. Save Energy at the Start

No matter the distance, you’ll experience breathtaking views and a test of endurance. Start slow and conserve your energy for the final kilometers, when the snow and climbs will feel tougher. The generous time limits mean you can take your time and enjoy the journey.

4. Plan Your Energy Intake

Make sure to refuel regularly. There are aid stations along the route, but it’s a good idea to carry your own energy bars or quick snacks for when you need an extra boost.

Bring Family and Friends – There’s Plenty to Explore Even for Non-Participants at Höga Kusten Winter Trail

Bring Family and Friends

High Coast Winter Trail isn’t just an experience for runners – it’s an adventure for everyone! While you’re out running, jogging, or power hiking – most likely a mix of all three – there’s plenty for non-participants to explore.

They can enjoy the Vinterparken, with activities and a cozy, festive atmosphere, or set off on their own little adventure. A leisurely hike to the top of the World Heritage site, where Skuleberget’s Toppstuga awaits with warm drinks and stunning views, is a perfect way to experience the magnificent nature without the pressure of time.

For those who prefer a more relaxed day, there’s always the Winter Café at the finish area – a cozy spot to unwind with a book, sip hot chocolate, or perhaps get a bit of work done (if absolutely necessary). It’s a place where community and calm come together, and where you can reunite after the race to share your experiences.
