HIGH COAST WINTER TRAIL
TRAVEL & STAY
HIGH COAST
The High Coast World Heritage Site stretches from the High Coast Bridge (Höga Kusten-bron) in the south to the city of Örnsköldsvik in the north. At the very heart of the World Heritage area lies Skuleberget and FriluftsByn – the starting and finishing point of the High Coast Winter Trail.
Getting here is easy by car via the E4 highway, which runs straight through the region. You can also take a Y-buss coach, with routes running from Umeå in the north and Stockholm in the south.
Reaching the area by train or plane is also possible, but combining this with local buses can be tricky, especially on weekends when public transport in the World Heritage area is limited – in that case, taxi is recommended.
Accommodation should be booked as early as possible. The High Coast Winter Trail attracts hundreds of participants each year, and most cabins, hotels, and Airbnbs between Örnsköldsvik and Härnösand fill up quickly during race weekend.
TRAVEL TO
THE HIGH COAST
The High Coast Winter Trail starts and finishes at FriluftsByn, located on the southern side of Skuleberget, right in the heart of the High Coast World Heritage Site.
Most participants travel here by car or carpool with other runners, but another good option is the Y-buss coach, which runs from Umeå in the north and from Stockholm in the south, stopping in Docksta, just a few kilometers from FriluftsByn.
You can also travel by train or plane to Örnsköldsvik or Kramfors, but make sure to check connections carefully. Weekend public transport within the World Heritage area is limited, so you may need to plan for a taxi transfer.
In short – driving or carpooling is the easiest option. You can find travel buddies by posting in the High Coast Trail Runners Facebook group. About two weeks before the race, we’ll also open a carpool thread to help participants coordinate rides.
TIPS: RESA TILL HÖGA KUSTEN
During summer, there are plenty of travel options to the High Coast – but in winter, there is no weekend public transport within the area.
Our tip: drive, carpool, or take the Y-buss. Alternatively, arrange a taxi or shared ride for your return journey during the weekend to the train stations in Örnsköldsvik or Kramfors.

CAR / CARPOOLING
The easiest way to get to and around the High Coast. You can offer or request carpooling in the event’s Facebook group:: High Coast Trail Runners »
Y-BUSS »
A convenient and affordable option. Y-Buss runs south from Umeå and north from Stockholm Cityterminalen and Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Get off at the Docksta stop and walk about 1.5 km to FriluftsByn.
TRAIN »
Take the SJ train to Örnsköldsvik or Kramfors. There are weekday buses within the High Coast area, but no services on weekends, so you’ll need to plan for a taxi between FriluftsByn and the train stations. WHERE TO STAY
ON THE HIGH COAST
The High Coast offers a wide range of accommodation options – from simple to more comfortable stays. The most convenient choice is to stay right at FriluftsByn, where both the start and finish are located. You can book your own cabin and enjoy the peaceful surroundings, or share with friends and family for an even more memorable weekend.
If you’re looking for a simple and affordable place to sleep, bring a sleeping mat and stay at the runner’s camp – but make sure to book early, as spots fill up quickly.
There are also several other options within walking distance, as well as plenty of accommodation along the High Coast, from Örnsköldsvik in the north to Härnösand in the south, if you’re arriving by car.
ACCOMODATION TIPS
Book your cabin at FriluftsByn early. During the High Coast Winter Trail, cabins are rented from Friday to Sunday. If you share the cabin with friends, the total cost for the weekend is usually no more than about 1000 SEK per person – but of course, you decide how many people to share with, up to the cabin’s maximum capacity.
If you’re looking for a bed in a shared cabin, keep an eye out or post in the Facebook group High Coast Trail-Runners to let others know you’re open to sharing accommodation.
